Manhattan Beach's 36th annual Pumpkin Race turns the blocks by the pier into "Pumpkin Race Land" on Sunday, October 18. Families race homemade pumpkin racers (a pumpkin with two axles and wheels) side by side down Manhattan Beach Boulevard in a single-elimination bracket, and anything judged a "Cheater Pumpkin" is smashed by the Head Race Official's mallet. Kids who arrive without a racer can build one from scratch with help from the Pumpkin Pit Crew, and the Tinker Zone has wheels, axles, tools and decorations for last-minute adjustments. The free festival starts at noon with activities for all ages and costumes are encouraged; races begin at 2 p.m. sharp. Official race kits are sold in advance at City Hall and several downtown shops. Parking is tight downtown, so the city suggests its on-demand MB Wave Rider shuttle.
