About this adventure
On the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, The Hermitage's homeschool day explores the life of a War of 1812 soldier. Children plot subterfuge with spycraft activities, enjoy "rations" of hot chocolate and hear stories of lesser-known participants in the 1815 battle, such as Lt. Col. Joseph Savary and his Louisiana militia of free men of color, and Jordan Noble, the drummer boy. Activities are designed for ages 5 to 11 but are open to all, and run from 10 am to 3 pm. Grounds admission is free for this program; mansion tours can be added for a fee. Picnic space is available and leashed dogs are welcome. Other Battle of New Orleans commemorations take place across the site the same day.
