Families can help restore the desert at White Tank Mountain Regional Park by flinging native seed pellets, made earlier in the year, into the park's landscape as part of Maricopa County Parks' Desert Defenders project. The seeds are chosen for their resilience in the local environment. Volunteers meet at the Area #4 parking lot at 8 a.m. and hike along nature trails to spread the seed until about 10:30 a.m.; the county says when a hike will exceed 2 miles round trip. Bring work gloves, water and a snack, and wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants and closed-toe shoes. Family participation is encouraged, a parent must be present for minors, and participants are recommended to be at least five years old. Registration through sign-up.com is required, and the event may be cancelled if fewer than two people sign up.
