Ranger Derik leads an evening scorpion hunt at Cave Creek Regional Park as the full moon rises over the desert. The group walks a 3-mile out-and-back on the Slate Trail past tall saguaros, then searches for scorpions on the way back to the trailhead, when the animals glow under ultraviolet light; bring a blacklight if you have one to help the ranger. Hikers need plenty of water, protective clothing, sturdy shoes and a fully charged flashlight. Water and restrooms are at the trailhead. This suits older children and teens who can manage three miles at night. Space is limited to 25; register by calling the Cave Creek Nature Center with your name, phone and group size. Registration closes November 28.
