About this adventure
Arizona State Parks volunteer Lisa leads a short wildlife walk at Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction, below the Superstition Mountains. The route is an easy one-mile out-and-back with little elevation gain, though parts are loose and steep, and it takes about an hour at a social pace because the group stops at interpretive signs to talk about the animals that live in the Sonoran Desert and how they get by there. Children ages 8 and up are welcome, as are leashed dogs. Bring good shoes and water, and meet at the Palo Verde Day Use Ramada before 10 a.m. Only the first 12 people to arrive can join, so come early. The remaining dates this fall are Friday mornings: November 20, December 4 and December 18, 2026 — a weekday outing that suits homeschool families. The hike itself costs nothing beyond the park's entrance fee, which the page does not list. It is part of Arizona State Parks' Outdoors250 series.
