About this adventure

Once a month through the winter, volunteers from the Superstition Mountain Astronomical League set up their telescopes at Lost Dutchman State Park, at the foot of the Superstition Mountains, and let visitors look at the moon, planets, star clusters and galaxies. It is an informal, walk-through program: families move from telescope to telescope at their own pace at the park's Cholla site. No chairs are provided, and visitors park in a lot next to the site. Attendance is capped at 60 registrants per night, split into two 45-minute sessions, and registration is required — there are no walk-ups. Each registrant must arrive within 15 minutes either side of the start of their slot, and late arrivals cannot be admitted, so leave extra driving time. Pets and personal telescopes are not allowed, and the park gate closes right after the program. In this season's calendar the star parties fall on November 14 and December 12, 2026 and January 9, 2027; nights can be cancelled for weather, with an email notice and a refund. Registration ($10 per person, no separate vehicle fee when everyone in the car is registered) is through Arizona State Parks' online reservation system, filtering by Lost Dutchman State Park.
