About this adventure

Rangers at Picacho Peak State Park — the landmark peak beside Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson — lead a short Junior Ranger hike for children twice a month through the cooler season. The walk follows the park's Nature Trail and is not strenuous. Along the way kids work through a Junior Ranger activity packet, which the ranger goes over with the group during and after the hike; at the end the ranger swears everyone in as Junior Rangers, stamps and signs the packets and hands out official Junior Ranger badges. The hike is suitable for ages five and up. Bring water and proper footwear for hiking, and meet at the Nature Loop trailhead in the Harrington Loop parking lot for the 10 a.m. start. Register by calling the park at 520-466-3183 or through Arizona State Parks' online reservation site; when registering, count only the children who will attend. The dates in this season's window are November 15, December 5 and December 20, 2026 and January 10, 2027, with more hikes into March; the November 7 hike is cancelled. The park charges a vehicle entrance fee, and the hike page lists no separate program fee.
