Every Saturday and Sunday (except during special gated events such as The Polar Express) the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris runs its museum railway with real operating trolleys and locomotive-hauled trains. One ticket is good all day, so children can ride as many times as they like during scheduled operations. Between rides families can walk the 14-acre open-air museum, look at the historic buildings and the unrestored collection, step into open exhibits for a closer look at the equipment, and picnic in Holstrom Park. Parking, entry to the grounds and entry to open exhibits are free; only ride tickets cost money, and cab or caboose rides are an extra add-on. Departure times change by season, so check the ride-ticket page before driving out. A good outing for train-loving toddlers through school-age kids.
