On every open day (Wednesday to Sunday) the Living Coast Discovery Center on Gunpowder Point in Chula Vista runs a fixed timetable of short keeper talks that families can plan a visit around. At 10:30 a.m. Urban Oasis introduces local animals that live alongside people, including a non-releasable raccoon; at 11:30 a.m. educators talk about the centre's non-releasable bald and golden eagles at Eagle Mesa; at 12:30 p.m. Wildlife Surprise features a rotating animal such as moon jellies, chuckwallas, snakes or owls; at 1:30 p.m. the Shark & Ray presentation covers leopard sharks, bat rays, guitarfish and horn sharks at the touch-tank exhibit; and at 2:30 p.m. the Sea Turtle presentation at Turtle Lagoon explains the green sea turtles that also live in San Diego Bay. Each talk lasts about 30 minutes and is pitched at visitors of all ages, so preschoolers and school-age children can drop in and out. Presentations are included in a visit to the centre (the calendar lists no extra fee), and staff may cancel any presentation at their discretion. The centre is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
