Docents at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve lead free one-hour tours of the Rancho de los Peñasquitos ranch house, an adobe that the county describes as a 200-year-old living piece of local history. Tours run every Saturday at 11:00 and on most Sundays at 13:00 through the holiday season and into January, and they suit school-age children who are learning California history as well as younger visitors who can walk through the rooms with a grown-up. The county lists the tours as free and for all ages; weddings and special events booked at the ranch house cancel a tour, and bad weather may cancel too, so the county asks visitors to call ahead on (858) 484-7504. The ranch house sits on Canyonside Park Drive at the west end of the preserve, near the trailheads into the canyon, so a tour pairs easily with a short walk.
