County park rangers lead an easy, family-friendly 1.5-mile walk through Wilderness Gardens County Preserve in Pauma Valley, the county's first open space preserve, on selected Saturday mornings from November through mid-January. Along the way the group stops at a historically significant grinding stone used by Native Americans and at the remains of one of the first grist mills in Southern California, which gives children a concrete look at how people here once processed acorns and grain. The walk is open to all ages and takes about two hours including stops. It meets at the main kiosk in the Wilderness Gardens parking area. There is no fee for the hike itself, but the preserve charges a $5 parking fee. Families can stay afterwards to keep hiking or picnic in the valley. Rain may cancel a walk; the preserve asks visitors to call (760) 742-1631 ahead. This is separate from the Sunday Trail Trek at the same preserve.
