On the day after Thanksgiving, the Park District's Green Friday invites families outdoors instead of to the mall. At Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve, the underground Greathouse Visitor Center opens so visitors can learn about the area's coal-mining history and chat with naturalists about the parks. The quarter-mile route from the upper parking lot at the end of Somersville Road is partly paved and partly gravel with a mild incline. All ages and leashed dogs are welcome; drop in, no registration. A $5 parking fee applies when the entry kiosk is staffed.
