About this adventure

Each January, when bald eagles winter along the rivers near Alton, the Alton Visitor Center hosts free meet-and-greets with a live American bald eagle. Handlers from the World Bird Sanctuary bring the bird indoors, share facts about eagles and their conservation, and answer questions, and families can get close enough for a photo with a raptor whose wingspan can top six feet. Drop in any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; a visit takes as long as your children's questions last. It pairs well with an eagle-spotting drive along the Great River Road, and the visitor center has maps of the best viewing spots.
