About this adventure

A New Year's Day First Day Hike to the vanished hamlet of Wash Woods inside False Cape State Park. An open-air tram carries the group through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and rangers then lead a walk of about 3 miles, partly over soft sand, through maritime forest, a live oak hammock, dunes and beachfront, ending at an 1800s cemetery. It suits families with children who can manage a longer sandy walk. January 1 is a free parking day at Virginia State Parks, but the hike costs $10 per person and reservations are required. Meet at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge parking lot.
