About this adventure

In the late 1960s and early 1970s the city turned a 640,000-ton pile of garbage into the nation's first landfill park. Today Mount Trashmore covers 165 acres, with two man-made hills (Mount Trashmore, 60 feet high, and the smaller Encore Hill), two lakes, a skate park with a vert ramp, and multi-use paths. The Kids Cove Playground, opened in 2010, is nearly 26,000 square feet on a rubber surface. It has three zones: a giant structure with slides, elevated walkways and climbers; swings for all ages, including a wheelchair swing and therapeutic cradle seats; and a third play area. There are picnic shelters with charcoal grills, volleyball courts, a boardwalk, outdoor fitness stations and public restrooms. Kids can fish from the bank with a Virginia freshwater license. Swimming and wading in the lakes aren't allowed. Through Dec 16, 2026 the free Where Wonder Grows: Sanctuary art installation is set up beyond Shelter 3.
