Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site's annual Civil War Christmas in Camp shows how soldiers observed Christmas during the war. A Union Santa Claus, based on Thomas Nast's 1863 Harper's Weekly cover, greets children at the reconstructed Officers' Hut and visits the soldiers. Reenactors portray army life in winter camps decorated for the season, open Christmas boxes from home and sing period carols around the campfire. Inside, the museum is trimmed with greenery and a Victorian parlor tree, and children can make a holiday card or ornament. Admission is free; call 703.746.4848 for details.
