About this adventure

The Bastrop County Museum & Visitor Center on Main Street hosts its long-running Día de los Muertos Community Display through November 1. Local families build ofrendas (altars) honoring loved ones who have died, and each tells a personal story with photos, flowers and keepsakes. Visitors can learn about the history and traditions of Día de los Muertos and what the symbols on an altar mean, and can leave messages and flowers at a shared community ofrenda. It is a quiet, reflective exhibit that works well for school-age children with a grown-up to explain it. On November 1 the ofrendas are also featured in the Honor Walk in downtown Bastrop. The display is included with regular museum admission; the museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
