A docent-led autumn tour at the James K. Polk State Historic Site about how a rural community of the early 1800s responded to death. Visitors walk through the steps of a wake — body preparation, the wake itself, burial and stone-cutting — stopping in the kitchen house and ending in the Polk family cemetery. The site describes it as family friendly and suitable for all ages. Expect up to a quarter mile of walking on uneven ground; fees are paid on site before the tour, and tours are cancelled in extreme heat, cold or rain. Saturdays at 3 p.m. through November 7.
