Fright Night is Downtown Waxhaw's free family Halloween evening. From 4 to 6 p.m. downtown businesses open their doors with candy for costumed trick-or-treaters of all ages, and storefronts are decorated for a contest the public votes on online from Oct. 24 to 31. Around downtown there are several stops for children: a community costume contest at 216 W. North Main St. with time slots by age (5 and under at 4:00, ages 6–10 at 4:30, 11 and up at 5:00, groups and families at 5:30), a trunk-or-treat by Waxhaw United Methodist Church at W. North Main and N. Church St., free pumpkin painting at 110 McDonald St. while supplies last, crafts and games from the Waxhaw Woman's Club at 200 E. South Main St., a candy ladder challenge at 318 E. South Main St., and Carnival of Shadows, a short PG scare trail aimed at younger visitors (4:30–7 p.m., free, donations welcome). After 6 p.m. a block party with live music and a food truck continues on E. North Main Street.
