Once a month, on the third Sunday from 8:00 to 9:00 am, Newport Aquarium opens early in a sensory-relaxed setting for guests with autism, PTSD, dementia, anxiety and other sensory sensitivities. Capacity is lower, music is softer, microphones are limited, lighting is reduced, and there are extra calming areas and special animal encounters. A guide rates the touch, sight and sound levels of each exhibit, and noise-cancelling headphones and fidgets can be borrowed free, first come, first served. Each date has a theme: October 18 Underwater Pumpkin Glow, November 15 Thankful for Turtles, December 20 Scuba Santa. Normal operations resume at 9:00 am. Capacity is limited, so the aquarium recommends buying tickets online in advance.
