Rangers at the Johnson Branch Unit of Ray Roberts Lake State Park host their fourth annual all-day Halloween celebration. The afternoon centers on a Kids Costume Contest for ages 16 and younger in the Nature Center parking lot, held in three rounds: Funniest at 12:30 pm, Scariest/Spookiest at 1:30 pm and Most Original at 2:30 pm. Children enter the category that fits their costume, must check in within 10 minutes of its start to get an entry number, and are judged on creativity, originality, effort, authenticity and presentation. Every participant receives Halloween candy. In the evening, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, campers in the Juniper and Walnut loops compete in campsite decorating and hand out treats for trick-or-treating, and winners are announced the next morning. The events use wheelchair-accessible spaces. Programs are included in park entry fees; book a day pass or use the self-pay station, since some programs run after headquarters closes.
