Denton Parks & Recreation's free Halloween Carnival fills the MLK Jr. Recreation Center and park on a Friday evening before Halloween. Children can play free carnival games, collect goodie bags, get their faces painted, use the bounce houses and go trick-or-treating, all in costume. A costume contest starts judging at 7 pm, and awards are presented at 8 pm in four categories: best family, best baby, best youth and best adult. Whole families can enter together. A photographer is on site, and there is a haunted courtyard where families can take their own photos. Entry and activities are free; low-priced concessions are sold. The carnival runs from 6 to 10 pm, so families with young children can come early and leave before the later hours.
