Klyde Warren Park's free holiday kickoff lights the Mayor's Tree in the deck park over Woodall Rodgers Freeway on the first Saturday evening of December. The park bills it as fun for the whole family: free photos with Santa, story time with Mrs. Claus, face painting, live dance performances, visits from Frosty and Rudolph, stilt walkers, music and seasonal treats, with the tree lit during the evening. The event runs from 4 to 7 pm, so young children can see the lights come on without a late night. It is presented by H-E-B/Central Market. Arrive early for Santa photos, dress for the weather because everything is outdoors, and check the park's parking page beforehand — the park sits between Uptown and the Arts District and street and garage parking fill quickly on event nights. The Boho Holiday Market runs in the park the same evening if you want to combine the outing with gift shopping.
