About this adventure
On the first weekend of December the Detroit Institute of Arts turns its Art-Making Studio over to paper snowflakes, an easy winter craft that works for small children with a grown-up's help and for older kids who want to try more intricate folds and cuts. Families drop in, sit down at the studio tables and fold, snip and unfold paper until a pattern appears, then take the snowflakes home to tape on windows or hang on a tree. No booking is needed for this drop-in session; the studio's weekly projects are meant for all ages, and the staff supply the paper and tools. The Friday session runs in the evening, when the museum is open late, and the Saturday and Sunday sessions run through the afternoon, so it is easy to fit a craft stop into a gallery visit. It pairs well with the museum's other December family offerings, and the craft itself takes as little or as long as a child likes.
