This Walktober walk is run by Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, KS Parks and Recreation at Wyandotte County Park near Bonner Springs. Participants join a guided history tour on a one-mile loop through the park, passing Sunflower Hills Golf Course, the George Meyn Building and the park's well-known A-frame shelter. Before finishing the loop, walkers can explore the Wyandotte County Historical Museum, where check-in takes place. Guided tours leave at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the first 200 participants at each Walktober location receive a commemorative button designed by artist Brooke Wangwe. A Plein Air Quick Paint competition takes place in the park at the same time. With a short route and fall colour, this suits families with school-age children who want an easy Sunday morning outdoors with a bit of local history.
