About this adventure

A family-friendly outdoor art workshop at Red Rock Canyon led in partnership with local artist Vanessa Maciel. Participants learn the traditional Mexican folk-art technique of cartonería (paper and paste sculpture) and build their own bat-inspired alebrije, the brightly painted fantastical creature figures. Along the way the session explains the role bats play in keeping the Mojave Desert ecosystem healthy and what people can do to protect them, which ties the craft to the season's bat and Día de los Muertos themes. The organizer says the workshop suits children and adults of all ages, there is no age limit, no hiking is involved and all art materials are provided. The program runs two hours outdoors. Like other Red Rock interpretive programs it is free, but advance registration on the conservancy's TimeTap page is required, and anyone driving the Scenic Drive or visiting the Visitor Center also needs a timed-entry reservation from Recreation.gov.
