About this adventure

For Native American Heritage Month, DISCOVERY Children's Museum sets up gallery activities that honor the Southern Paiute (Nuwuvi) people of the Las Vegas valley. In Toddler Town on Level 1, young children learn that prickly pear cactus fruit has long been a source of food and medicine for the Nuwuvi and create an artistic representation of it. In the Young at Art gallery on Level 3, kids study the geometric patterns of Nuwuvi baskets (diamonds, zigzags and repeating bands) and design their own pattern artwork. At the Patents Pending Science Bench, families look at photographs of ancient rock writing found across Nevada and practice respectful visiting: look with your eyes, do not touch the rock and leave the site as you found it. The activities run during museum hours that weekend.
