About this adventure

The second Southern Paiute weekend of DISCOVERY Children's Museum's Native American Heritage Month series centers on land, water and Indigenous creativity. In Toddler Town, children learn about Avi Kwa Ame (Spirit Mountain), considered among the most sacred places on Earth by the Mojave, Chemehuevi and some Southern Paiute people and home to desert bighorn sheep, desert tortoises and Gila monsters, then paint a watercolor of those animals. In Young at Art, kids meet Captain Paiute, the Indigenous superhero comic series created by Las Vegas Paiute Tribe member Theo Tso, and make artwork that encourages land and water preservation. At the Patents Pending Science Bench, families explore how the spring mound at today's Springs Preserve was built by groundwater, minerals and plants, and why it was a vital water place for the Southern Paiute people in this valley.
