The University of Pennsylvania's Class of 1923 Ice Rink in University City is open to the public, not just students, with a 17,000-square-foot indoor sheet that suits beginners and families looking for an inexpensive winter outing. The fall and winter public skating pattern is short midday sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, an early-evening session on Saturday and a one-hour Sunday afternoon session, but sessions are cancelled at times (for example October 23), so check the rink's calendar before going. Skates can be rented at the rink. Groups of ten or more get a per-person rate that includes rentals. The rink also runs Learn to Skate classes, figure skating freestyle ice and open hockey, and it is the home ice of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation's travel teams.
