About this adventure
A.K. Smiley Public Library celebrates Día de los Muertos with an afternoon of crafts, music and food in Smiley Park, the park around the historic library in downtown Redlands. While the park activities run, the Contemporary Club at 173 S. Eureka St. shows a room of community ofrendas, altars that local families and groups build to honor loved ones, along with other activities. The library's ofrenda guide explains what children will see on the tables: papel picado that lets loved ones know the spirits have arrived, favorite foods such as fruit, mole, chocolate and atole, candles that light a path for each departed soul, water to refresh visitors after their journey, plus marigolds (cempasúchil), sugar skulls, photographs and salt. It is an easy way to introduce kids to the tradition: make a craft in the park, then walk the altars and talk about the people being remembered. The deadline to build an ofrenda (October 16) has passed, so families come as visitors; the altars are taken down from 2 to 4 p.m.
