Effie Yeaw Nature Center sits inside Ancil Hoffman County Park in Carmichael and serves as the gateway to a Nature Study Area of trails along the American River. It is run by the nonprofit American River Natural History Association and is open Tuesday through Sunday; from November 1 to January 31 the hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (9 to 5 the rest of the year). Families can walk the trails, look for wildlife and visit the nature center building, which hosts the center's animal ambassadors and family programs for children up to age 8. The center asks visitors to stay on trails and practise Leave No Trace, not to collect plants or other natural items, and not to feed wildlife; dogs are not allowed (ADA service animals excepted), and visitors should watch for rattlesnakes and ticks. Some programs use fish and nuts in public spaces. Parking is free for center members and Sacramento County Park Pass holders; otherwise a daily parking pass costs $8 at the self-pay station (county park entrance fee $8 per vehicle, $11 on holidays and holiday weekends). Drive in from Tarshes Drive and California Avenue — the San Lorenzo Way park entrance is permanently locked.
