Once a month on a Friday morning, county park rangers bring Franklin, the resident tortoise from the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve Nature Center, to the Solana Beach branch of the San Diego County Library for a half-hour nature storytime. Rangers from the County Parks and Recreation department read stories with Franklin and his friends, giving toddlers, preschoolers and early-elementary children a close look at a live tortoise and a gentle introduction to the animals of the nearby lagoon. Sessions run from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. on October 30, November 20 and December 18. The library lists the programme for children from birth to five and for older kids, and no registration is shown. Families who enjoy it can visit Franklin's home base, the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center on Manchester Avenue in Cardiff, where the county runs Reading with Reptiles and other family programmes listed separately.
