About this adventure

Joseph D. Grant is Santa Clara County's largest regional park: 10,882 acres of grassy hills and big oaks in Halls Valley at the base of Mt. Hamilton, on the road up to Lick Observatory. A 51-mile trail system is open to hikers and horses, with mountain bikes allowed on over 75% of it, and dogs on a 6-foot leash are welcome on trails, picnic areas and campgrounds. Families can fish for warm-water species in the lake and ponds, picnic in shaded first-come areas, or camp at about 40 reservable family sites with hot showers. Kids with a phone or tablet can play Agents of Discovery, a free educational mission game that starts near the historic ranch house and loops more than 1.5 miles on the Hotel and Snell trails (download it on the guest Wi-Fi by the ranch house). Spring wildflowers are the park's best season; cattle still graze parts of the land.
