About this adventure

Winter Lodge in Palo Alto has been skating families under the open sky since 1956; it is the oldest ice rink in the Bay Area and the only permanent outdoor rink west of the Sierra. The recreation-sized rink is smaller than an arena sheet and built for family fun, with fireplaces to warm up by between laps. For the youngest skaters, 'Little Bear' push-along skating aids are available on the indoor ice during the Saturday 3–5 pm and Sunday 3–5 pm and 5:30–7:30 pm sessions (up to 15 minutes each, shared). The Sunday evening session is a family session in which skaters under 18 must be with a parent. Gloves are required for all skaters and helmets are recommended for beginners (bike helmets are fine). Rental skates run from toddler size 6 up. Public session tickets must be bought online in advance, up to 30 days ahead.
