For Día de los Muertos, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium sets up a public ofrenda (altar) created with 4th-year and Heritage Spanish students from Tacoma Public Schools' Science and Math Institute (SAMi). This altar honors animals that have touched people's lives, whether pets, zoo residents or wild creatures. Families are invited to bring a photo of a beloved animal to place on the ofrenda, read the stories posted there, reflect quietly or share memories. It is a gentle way to talk with children about remembrance and about the cultural tradition behind the holiday during a regular zoo visit. The ofrenda is part of a normal zoo day and is included with admission or membership.
