About this adventure
Pere Marquette State Park, the largest state park in Illinois, leads a guided winter night hike through the woods above the Illinois River on an early-December Saturday. Walkers set out from the park's Visitor Center at 7 p.m. and look and listen for nocturnal animals such as owls, raccoons, opossums and white-tailed deer. The walk lasts about two hours on wooded trails in the cold and dark, so it suits older children and teens who can handle a longer evening hike with a parent. Dress in warm layers and sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight. Space is by RSVP: call the park office to reserve a spot.
