The City of Fairfax turns Old Town Square into a winter scene for its Festival of Lights and Carols, an afternoon-into-evening holiday party in Downtown Fairfax. From noon there is live holiday music, complimentary s'mores and warm cider, and children's crafts and activities around the square. Santa is available for photos from 3 to 5 p.m., and at 5:30 p.m. the city lights the tree with a carol sing-along to close the day. The event is free and works well for families with children of any age who want a Santa visit and a tree lighting in one stop; the city says the performance schedule will be posted in November. Dress warmly, as the festival is outdoors.
