Mayor Michelle Wu, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and the Province of Nova Scotia host the annual Boston Common tree lighting next to the Visitor Information Center. The ceremony marks the 55th year Nova Scotia has given Boston a tree in thanks for relief efforts after the 1917 Halifax Harbor explosion; Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is expected to attend. The City page calls it the 84th annual celebration in one place and the 85th in another. At about 8:15 p.m. the Mayor joins the Friends of the Public Garden to switch on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall lights from Arlington Street to Charlesgate. Free.
