The 13th annual Newton Turkey Trot is a neighborhood 5K that has grown to more than 1,800 runners, with a separate 1-mile kids fun run that starts first at 8:30 am, followed by the 5K at 9:00. Both start and finish at Zervas Elementary School on Beethoven Avenue; the USATF-certified 5K runs out and back through Newton neighborhoods and along the Commonwealth Avenue carriage lane toward City Hall. Every child in the kids' run gets a medal, and the fastest boy and girl aged 12 or under win a prize. Bikes and strollers are not allowed on either course, and dog owners line up at the back. The school's lot is closed, so plan to park on Allen Street or nearby streets, or walk. Bibs and shirts are picked up at Heartbreak Hill Running Company in Newton Centre on Friday, November 20 (4-6:30 pm) and Saturday, November 21 (noon-4 pm). The race sells out most years; all proceeds go to the Newton Food Pantry and Centre Street Food Pantry.
