The City of Dover's ice arena on Portland Avenue runs drop-in public skating most days of the year, apart from an annual maintenance shutdown in late spring. Two kinds of sessions alternate: Recreational Public Skate is open skating to music for exercise and fun, with no figure-skating lessons, moves or hockey sticks allowed, so it is the one to pick with children. Instructional Public Skate is for skaters practising figure skating or hockey skills, alone or with a pro they arrange themselves; it is not a learn-to-skate class and the arena does not supply coaches. Children 3 and under skate free, and rental skates cost $5. The October 2026 calendar shows weekday Recreational sessions around midday and a Sunday afternoon session, but the arena publishes a new monthly PDF schedule and asks skaters to call to confirm times.
