River Park's student dancers stage an annual audience-participation retelling of The Nutcracker on Sunday, December 13, from 3 to 4 p.m., in which all the principal roles are danced by volunteers from the audience. Children (and brave grown-ups) can step on stage as Clara, the Nutcracker or the Sugar Plum Fairy while the park's dance students carry the rest of the story; the organizers invite everyone to wear tights, slippers and holiday finest. It is free to the public with no registration — just show up — and listed for all ages, making it a relaxed, low-cost alternative to a full ballet for kids who would rather dance than sit still. River Park is in Lincoln Square near Foster and Francisco avenues.

What was checked & what still needs confirmation

Official CPD event page with 2026 date, time, fee and age-range label. 'Youth'/'All Ages' is the district's age-group category, not a stated numeric range. Page prints ZIP 60611, which does not match River Park's North Side location; ZIP omitted from address.
