About this adventure

On Saturday, December 12, from noon to 4 p.m., the McHenry County Conservation District opens the restored 1854 Powers-Walker House in Glacial Park, Ringwood, for Holiday at Grandma's House. Volunteers in historical attire show how a mid-19th-century household prepared for winter and the holidays, and visitors can see a fresh tree decorated with homemade and natural trimmings. The Greek Revival farmhouse, built by the Powers family and later bought by local landowner Samuel Walker, was saved from demolition in 1996, restored by volunteers since 1998, and designated a McHenry County historic landmark in 2015; it is open only during special events and programs. The event is free, for all ages, with no registration needed. Nature's Ornaments, a drop-in craft, runs the same afternoon at the district's Lost Valley Visitor Center in the same park.
