Texas Chess Center teaches a monthly chess session in the Reading Room at Klyde Warren Park. Each one starts with a focused 20-minute lesson on a strategy, technique or part of the game, then turns into open play where people practise what they learned and play each other. The park says it's for chess fans of all levels, mixing structured learning with casual games. That makes it a friendly way for a school-age child who knows how the pieces move to play opponents other than family. Sessions are Sundays from 2 to 3 p.m. on October 18, November 15 and December 13, 2026. The listing doesn't mention a fee or registration. Arrive at the start so you catch the lesson part.
