About this adventure
Oakland County Parks naturalists lead an early-evening hike at Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights to mark the longest night of the year. The program invites participants to seek out the darkness of a December evening on a restorative walk, noticing how the woods change once the sun goes down. The county lists the hike as suitable for all ages, so it is a good first night hike for children who are curious about the dark, and older kids and teens can enjoy it alongside their parents. The hike runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, two days before the solstice. The fee is $5 per person for residents and non-residents alike, and registration is through the county parks WebTrac system, where the session showed open spots when checked. It is an outdoor walk on a December night, so dress children warmly in layers and boots. A similar hike runs the evening before at Wint Nature Center in Clarkston.
