Cranbrook Institute of Science / Cranbrook Art Museum

Cranbrook's fourth annual Winter Solstice Celebration spans both Cranbrook Institute of Science and Cranbrook Art Museum with music, stories and hands-on fun. At the Institute, families draw on solstice traditions across cultures: make a lantern for the afternoon parade and add to a community light installation, discover the reasons for the seasons and how animals and people survive winter (including a demonstration of early fire-starting), and hear a Native American version of a familiar northern constellation story while designing a constellation to take home. At the Art Museum there are solstice art-making activities for all ages and a sound piece, The Sun Stands Still. At 4:45 p.m. everyone joins an outdoor lantern parade from the Institute to the Art Museum. The celebration runs Saturday, December 19, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. One ticket covers both museums: $20 general admission, $15 for members; planetarium tickets cost extra. Register in advance.
