About this adventure
Artists-in-residence Barbara Teller Ornelas and her son Michael Teller Ornelas, fifth- and sixth-generation Diné (Navajo) weavers featured in the museum's Native Arts in Miniature exhibition, demonstrate traditional weaving at the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures. Visitors watch them spin with a lap spindle and work on specialized looms, and the artists talk about their materials, tools and process while making new pieces. It is a drop-in program, so families can stop by during a museum visit; older kids who like crafts or have seen the exhibition's tiny rugs and baskets will get the most out of it. Both artists' rugs, full-size and miniature, have won recognition at the Heard Museum's Indian Fair + Market and the Santa Fe Indian Market. The demonstration is included with museum admission.
