About this adventure

The Village of Wauwatosa opens its holiday season with an evening tree lighting at the small Pocket Park where Harwood and Wauwatosa Avenues meet. The night starts at 4 p.m. with the grand opening of the Village Christmas Market along Harwood Avenue and Root Common, followed at 5 p.m. by the tree lighting ceremony. Around 5:20 p.m. the crowd counts down to light the tree, and Santa pulls up on a fire truck, which is the moment most young children wait for. Afterward families can stay for the market until 9 p.m. for food, hot chocolate and gift stalls, and children can drop a letter in the market's mailbox for Santa. Organizers collect food donations for the Tosa Cares holiday food drive, so bring a canned or boxed item if you can. Seven free public parking lots sit within a five-minute walk; the Harts Mills and Harmonee Bridge lots on Harwood Avenue south of the tracks are closest, across a pedestrian footbridge. Expect a standing, outdoor crowd in December weather.
