About this adventure
Three Rivers Park District's Outdoor Recreation School turns three days of winter break into an ice-fishing camp for kids ages 10 to 15. Campers are dropped off and picked up each day at Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove, and instructors drive them to different lakes within the park district to fish for panfish, northern pike, walleye and other species. Along the way they learn how to check frozen water for thickness and quality before stepping out, drill holes with a hand auger, and try different rods and reels, bait, tip-ups and basic flasher-style electronics. It suits young anglers who already like fishing and want to learn winter techniques from experienced instructors, as well as kids curious to try it for the first time, since all equipment is provided. Days are long and mostly outside on the ice, so campers need warm, waterproof boots, shoes that can get wet and layered winter clothing. The park district emails details before camp starts.
