Lowry Nature Center in Carver Park Reserve near Victoria offers a free two-hour winter afternoon for families on Saturday, December 12. A Three Rivers Park District naturalist teaches the basics of starting a fire in winter, trying out a variety of fire-starting techniques, and then everyone warms up around a cozy campfire with a cup of hot cocoa. The program is open to all ages, so it works for families with younger children as well as older kids who want to learn a real outdoor skill. It is free, but the park district asks participants to sign up through its online registration, which stays open until the day of the program. Dress for the weather, since the activity takes place outside.
