About this adventure
The New Jersey Youth Symphony's holiday concert Two Nutcrackers pairs two versions of the same score on UCPAC's Main Stage in Rahway: Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite played by the NJYS Youth Symphony (Helen H. Cha-Pyo, music director) and Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's swinging jazz Nutcracker Suite played by the NJYS Jazz Orchestra (Shamie Royston, director). The NJYS Youth Orchestra under Oliver Hagen opens with works by Coleridge-Taylor, Rachmaninoff and Humperdinck. Because every musician is a student, it is an inspiring concert for children who play an instrument themselves, and hearing the classical and jazz versions back to back makes the music easy for young listeners to follow. The concert runs about 90 minutes on a Sunday afternoon; groups of seven or more can request a group reservation.
